Our Tagua products are made from seeds/nuts found within the pods of the Ivory Nut Palm. Tagua is known as the “ivory of the rainforest”, or “vegetable ivory” due to its exceptional carvability.  An since it serves as a viable alternative to animal ivory, thus protecting those animals. Tagua is the only natural and 100% sustainable alternative for animal ivory and its use is protecting species in danger and the world’s precious forests. Tagua products help preserve tropical rain-forests by providing a sustainable income for forest gathers.

The use of the Achira plant dates back to the Incas. Noted as a food staple and the seeds have been discovered in 500 year old tombs used for jewelry and rattles in South America. Also referred to as Cana and arrowroot. The seeds are pea-sized, round, brown or black in color, and exceptionally hard. They are used as beads in jewelry, rosaries, rattles and musical instruments. A purple dye can be extracted from the seed. Fibres extracted from the stem of the plant are used to make jute and paper.

Açaí seeds come from the Açaí palm, Euterpe oleracea, which is found in the lush rainforests of South America. These trees grow predominantly in swamps and in floodplains, and reach heights of approximately 45 to 90 feet tall. Small dark purple berries grow in dense clusters on the palm, and each contains a single seed about 0.25–0.4 inches in diameter. The fruit is harvested for food, and is most often served as a beverage. It has gained global fame in recent years due to its high antioxidant and energizing properties. In addition, Açaí leaves are used to make various handicrafts, such as hats and baskets, and Açaí wood is often used in construction.

Dried Orange peel

Jewellery made from an orange, or at least the peel of an orange, that has been squeezed thin, shaped, dried out and ‘cured’. Originally an ancient Mediterranean art and is also an art used by Peruvians for decades.

Using orange peel, the skins are soaked for several hours in water, then turned inside out and placed over a mould. They then spend several days drying in the sun, and are then removed from the mould and polished. The Jewellery will apparently last for decades, although the natural scent of the fruit will only last 3 or 4 months.
